Beyond adoption: Why AI fluency is the next workforce advantage

What is AI fluency, and why is it the next workforce advantage?

AI is becoming a fixture in the workplace, but widespread adoption doesn't mean employees know how to use it effectively. AI fluency is the ability to use AI confidently, critically and responsibly to improve work and decision-making. In a recent article for Unite.AI, Matt Jones, Executive Vice President of Strategy at Cielo, explains why AI fluency is becoming an essential workforce capability and how organizations can build it.

Research from Google and Ipsos found that 40% of employees use AI at work, but only 5% are truly AI fluent. That gap shows why AI adoption alone is not enough. As Jones explains, employees also need the confidence and judgment to identify where AI can add value, critically evaluate its outputs and recognize when human decision-making should remain at the center.

Organizations can build an AI-fluent workforce by developing existing employees, not only by hiring AI specialists. Talent strategies should prioritize learning agility, curiosity, critical thinking and judgment. Leaders also need to establish clear guardrails and redesign roles, processes and workflows so people and AI can contribute their distinct strengths.

Success should be measured by outcomes, not AI usage rates. The clearest indicators of AI fluency are better work, stronger decisions, improved employee and customer experiences, and greater business performance.
