Challenges

Highly skilled talent, highly competitive market

Because of the nature of its business, Siemens PLM Software continuously needs to recruit, develop and retain highly skilled talent with specific technical and consultancy acumen. The available talent pool is extremely competitive with little possibility of mixing with the parent company’s workforce.

Transforming recruitment for Siemens

Siemens PLM Software partnered with Cielo to achieve many business-critical HR objectives, including accelerating time to hire, reducing costs, and creating talent pipelines.

After reviewing its recruitment policy, Siemens PLM Software realized it didn’t need a dedicated talent acquisition sourcing function. Instead, it decided the best option was highly flexible support that could help with a planned redeployment program in Germany and return quickly to recruitment activity as soon as market confidence rebound. So, the dedicated Cielo resource embedded in the company’s German operations was immediately slimmed down to one individual, who immediately switched focus to the internal recruitment and redeployment program. At the same time, Cielo's Executive Search team continued to provide support.

When market confidence improved, Siemens PLM Software needed to once again increase its consultancy and technical capabilities – and fast, to take advantage of new commercial opportunities. Cielo immediately scaled up the dedicated Siemens PLM Software team, stepped up the involvement of its head office search team and implemented a new applicant tracking system.

“Cielo’s ability to provide both broad, on-site recruitment services and international Executive Search for our business across Europe has made them one of very few outside partners that we trust with our brand. Because of their flexibility and commitment throughout challenging economic times, our relationship has grown and developed, ensuring that we get on board the very best people, who we’re convinced will make Siemens even more successful in the future,” said Kirsten Mayer, Executive Vice President – People & Culture at Siemens PLM Software.

Results

Bright talent acquisition outcomes

Together, the Siemens PLM Software and Cielo team achieved:

  • Standardized talent acquisition approach
  • Increased HR involvement in talent sourcing
  • Acceleration of time to hire
  • Reduction of costs
  • Creation of talent pipelines
  • Better understanding of local recruitment challenges
  • 95% direct hires

Despite the many talent acquisition challenges – rapid escalation of necessary hires, scarcity of relevant talent, and finding specialists for a wide range of disparate locations – the Cielo and Siemens PLM Software team delivered glowing results in just a short time. Together, they created well-defined talent pipelines that put the right candidates in place to meet all the job requirements.

The team’s success with the Germany project led to implementing a similar structure in the APAC region, embedding a team into the Siemens Shanghai office supported by a team in Hong Kong. This team provides expert guidance to the embedded Siemens team, mirroring the support of the U.K. group to the onsite project in Germany.
