Identifying talent needs critical for acquisition and management

Seb O’Connell, Cielo’s Managing Director of Europe, recently participated on a panel at a London HR Connection event at the London School of Economics: Talent management: the future of HR or a flash in the pan? provided a description of some of the main points from the discussion, including whether to hire internally or externally and whether talent acquisition and talent management are two separate entities.

While there was not a strong opinion either way about hiring internally versus externally, the panelists did agree that knowing your pipeline of able and available talent in your business will then help you plan for any external talent that you may need to bring in. The panel was also relatively split on the second question – some argued that talent acquisition is so important that it needs to be a separate focus, but other claimed that injecting more “talent acquisition” into talent management can only lead to better results.

Excerpts from the article:

Business needs to do more to identify talent critical to delivering growth across their organisations before externally acquiring it, according to recruitment experts at the latest London HR Connection roundtable.

When asked what organisations need to do when making the decision of whether to recruit business-critical talent externally, O’Connell said: “I think there needs to be a lot more understanding of what needs to be done about pipelining of talent – both internally and externally.

“What businesses struggle with is getting proper visibility going forward, and having the data analysis and looking at where people are in terms of what they need to deliver to the business and where they are in the talent pipeline.”
